In one of the largest cribs recalls in history, the United States Consumer Products and Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled close to 2 million cribs manufactured by Simplicity Inc. and Graco Children’s Products Inc in mid 2008. The Simplicity Cribs Recall happened because the product’s design was found to be defective. The cribs had also caused the death of at least three children, seven injuries, and 55 incidents. It was thus concluded that the units were unfit for human use and their recall was imminent.
One Year Later
As of April 2009, Simplicity Inc opted out of the crib making business. This prompted the CPSC to advise the customers to dispose of the cribs from the manufacturer irrespective of whether they think that the hardware and drop side were installed correctly. The CPSC retaliated that the cribs are still risky if used by small children.
Why Was the Simplicity Cribs Recall so Significant?
This particular recall involved at least one million Simplicity and Graco cribs. This means had the CPSC failed to recall the cribs, a lot more deaths, and injuries would have occurred. The Commission sighted the possibility of the drop side detaching from the crib as to the primary reason the Simplicity Cribs Recall had to be initiated. It further said that the detached drop side may create a dangerous gap that can lead to entrapment and eventual suffocation of infants.
The cribs recalled were manufactured in China and were sold at various departmental stores and children stores as well as mass merchandisers from January 1998 to May 2007 for $ 100 to $ 300.

It is interesting to note that despite 55 incidents, seven entrapments and three deaths, it took years for the Consumer Product and Safety Commission to warn consumers about the 1 million defective cribs. One of the consumers blamed Simplicity Inc. for selling these cribs for years while knowing that they were defective. The customer blamed the company for blatantly putting profits before the health and safety of the sleeping infants.
The company’s actions led an onset of legal suits as customers sought to be compensated for the injuries, deaths and entrapments for their young infants.
